Weathering Steel

Q: What fasteners should be used in a structure fabricated from weathering steel?

Cooper & Turner have been manufacturing HSFG bolts, nuts and hardened washers in specially formulated weathering steel for use in weathering steel structures for over thirty years. The bolts, nuts and hardened washers are made to the dimensions and mechanical properties of BS 4395 Part 1, General Grade and are manufactured from steel with the chemical composition of ASTM A325 Type 3A material. This steel has an atmospheric corrosion resistance and weathering characteristics comparable to that of structural grades of weathering steel, but contains additional alloying elements which enable it to be heat treated to the high tensile levels required of fasteners.

These weathering steel HSFG fasteners are currently available only in diameters M24, and M30. The supply of the special weathering steel from which the fasteners are manufactured can be limited; we therefore strongly recommend that customers check the current availability and lead time for these fasteners at the earliest opportunity.
